Twice-A-Week Trash Collection Starts Today

Hackensack brings back Twice-a-Week Garbage Pickup, Improving Quality of Life for Residents

Starting today, Hackensack residents will benefit from twice-a-week garbage pickup at no extra cost. This change demonstrates the City’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the resident experience by improving essential services like garbage collection, while also prioritizing cost-effectiveness.

Mayor Caseen Gaines stated, “Restoring twice a week garbage pickup was important to this Council, as it is a health and quality-of-life issue that impacts every neighborhood in our City. This was a clear win-win for our residents, a cost-effective change that improves services with no impact to our budget.”

Why this is a win-win:

  • Win for Our Residents: More frequent pickups reduce trash accumulation, minimize odors, and keep streets cleaner. This keeps our neighborhoods tidy and reduces the risk of pests. Additionally, preventing trash overflow keeps litter off the streets and out of storm drains, which helps protect Hackensack’s waterways and reduces flooding caused by blocked drains. This improvement can be accomplished all without increasing costs for taxpayers, allowing the City to enhance service while maintaining current expenses.

  • Win for Our DPW: More frequent pickups create lighter loads for DPW workers, reducing injury risks and protecting sanitation trucks from excessive wear. By leveraging existing trucks and crews, the City can efficiently increase collection frequency and maximize vehicle investment.

This upgrade is a direct response to resident feedback and reflects Hackensack’s commitment to improving daily life for everyone in the city. Hackensack remains committed to balancing improvements with fiscal responsibility.

As Chief Financial Officer James Mangin stated, “The City is constantly looking for ways to improve the quality of life for residents, but always with an eye toward keeping taxes as low as possible.”
