Hackensack Fire Department Announces Promotion of Anthony Riehl to Fire Chief

The Hackensack Fire Department is proud to announce the promotion of Anthony Riehl to the position of Fire Chief, effective immediately. Chief Riehl brings a wealth of experience and dedication to this new role, having served with distinction in the department for over two decades.

“Chief Riehl’s lifelong dedication to our city and his exemplary service within the fire department made him the ideal candidate for this promotion,” said Mayor John Labrosse. “I have the utmost confidence in his ability to guide our fire department with integrity and professionalism.”

Chief Riehl began his career with the Hackensack Fire Department on September 25, 2000, shortly after the birth of his first child, Julianna. Over the years, he steadily rose through the ranks, demonstrating exceptional leadership and commitment. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 2012 and then to Captain in 2019. In 2022, he achieved the rank of Deputy Chief before attaining the esteemed position of Chief of Department. Chief Riehl succeeds Chief Thomas Freeman, who retired after 40 years of service to the Hackensack community.

A lifelong resident of Hackensack, Chief Riehl has deep roots in the community. Raised on the south side of the city in a home that has seen four generations of family, Chief Riehl attended Jackson Ave School and graduated from Hackensack High School in the class of 1994. He met his wife, Heather, during his high school years, and they were married in 1998. They are proud parents to two children, Julianna and Shane.

“This career has been amazing, and I wouldn’t change a thing,” said Chief Riehl. “The fire department, and my amazing brothers and sisters, have been a gift to me and my family, and I will do my best to lead them.”

The Hackensack Fire Department serves a population of nearly 50,000 residents, and responds to over 6300 incidents annually. With a total of 106 highly trained firefighters, the department is dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of the community.
