Hackensack City Council to Dedicate Gordon “Scooter” Whiting Way Near Hackensack High School Campus

At last night’s City Council meeting, the Mayor and Council unanimously voted to rename the intersection of Beech Street and Second Street as Gordon “Scooter” Whiting Way, honoring beloved coach, educator, mentor, and lifelong Hackensack resident whose decades of service left a lasting mark on the City and generations of student-athletes.

Council Chambers was packed with friends, family, former students, and members of the community who gathered to celebrate Whiting’s life and legacy. The evening served as a fitting tribute to a man remembered not only for his leadership on the field and in the school district, but for the way he lived out his values every day.

Following the vote, the nearly two hundred attendees gave a standing ovation and outpouring of support.

“This is a well-deserved honor for the Whiting family. Scooter was a thoughtful, caring man who deeply loved Hackensack,” Mayor Caseen Gaines said. “He believed in this City, he believed in its people, and he always believed our shared future could be better if we worked together towards it, as a community.”

Whiting served as a football and basketball coach, Athletic Director, and Assistant Principal in the Hackensack School District. Across every role, he was known as a steady leader who pushed students to be tougher, more disciplined, and more accountable, not just as athletes, but as people prepared to meet life with purpose and integrity.

One especially meaningful part of Whiting’s legacy came during his time as Athletic Director, when he volunteered to coach the Girls High School Flag Football team allowing him to coach his daughter, Camille, while also helping expand athletic opportunities for female students.

But to those who knew him best, his impact reached far beyond the sidelines.

“He was a humble man. He was a man of few words, but he lived loudly,” said his wife, Dr. Joy Dorsey-Whiting. “He lived loudly for the children of Hackensack. He loved this City.”

A longtime Hackensack resident, Whiting was deeply rooted in the community. His passing on May 15, just two days after the Hackensack Board of Education accepted his retirement, was felt profoundly throughout the City.

Dr. Whiting closed her remarks with a line that captured the spirit of her husband’s life and the meaning of the tribute: “Your life is a better sermon than your lips.”

The City’s street renaming ensures that Gordon “Scooter” Whiting’s name and legacy will forever remain a part of Hackensack, serving as a permanent reminder of a life devoted to family, education, athletics, and community.

The location chosen for the dedication is at the Hackensack High School campus, near the main gymnasium and athletic fields, overlooking the many places where Whiting made such a lasting impact.

An official dedication ceremony is expected to take place in the fall, timed to coincide with the start of the Football season. Thank you to everyone who attended last night’s Council meeting and joined in honoring Gordon “Scooter” Whiting’s extraordinary legacy.
