On March 4th, 2026, Officers Ryan Conlon and Frank Caneja from the Hackensack Police Emergency Services Unit and Officers Jems Peralta and Robert Oropeza from the Hackensack Police Patrol Bureau, responded to Midtown Bridge Approach on the report of a 78-year-old male who had fallen and gone into cardiac arrest. Upon arrival, the officers, who have advanced medical training, immediately took over CPR compressions and initiated lifesaving efforts for the patient. Through the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), bag-valve-mask, and oxygen, the patient was resuscitated prior to transportation to the hospital. Through their concerted efforts as a team and quick action, these officers saved the patients life.
This event highlights the importance of CPR training and the high standards that Hackensack Police Officers are held to. All officers within the department are provided with CPR training and officers who possess EMT certificates, are afforded the opportunity to continue that specialization. Both Officers Conlon and Caneja possess their EMT certification, which undoubtedly contributed to the success of saving a life. All officers on scene are commended for their efforts and exemplify what it means to be part of the Hackensack Police Department.
In addition, Chief Michael Antista and the Hackensack Police Department would like to extend our thanks to the Hackensack Fire Department and Hackensack University Medical Center ALS/ BLS, who responded on scene and ultimately took over care for the patient. Interdepartmental cooperation and cohesion are at the heart of successful emergency services operations, and the Hackensack Police Department is dedicated to providing the highest level of service to our residents and visitors of the City of Hackensack.
