City of Hackensack Renames Street to Honor James “J.T.” Taylor

The City of Hackensack has renamed the corner of 1st Street and Clay Street to James “J.T.” Taylor Way, honoring the Hackensack native and music legend whose voice and career have brought joy to generations.

The dedication ceremony, held on August 15th, gathered residents, City Officials, family, and friends to pay tribute to a hometown hero whose voice has become a soundtrack for celebrations worldwide.

From singing in Hackensack’s church choir to becoming the lead singer of Kool & the Gang, Taylor created global hits like “Celebration” and “Ladies Night.” His remarkable journey earned him Rock & Roll Hall of Fame honors while maintaining strong community ties.

During the ceremony, “J.T.” took the podium to express his gratitude, promising Mayor Caseen Gaines and all of Hackensack that he would always be there for his hometown if needed, sealing that promise with a handshake.

Taylor attributed his success to the Hackensack Community, including the parents, peers, teachers, coaches, pastors, preachers, and business owners. He emphasized that his journey would not have been possible without the support and guidance he received from them.

He also credited Hackensack itself, noting that his experiences along Clay Street and Berdan Place, as well as at Hackensack High School and Carver Park, were foundational to his success.

The City of Hackensack extends its deepest gratitude to James “J.T.” Taylor for his extraordinary contributions to music and the community.

Mayor Gaines said it best, “Throughout the course of his life, James “J.T.” Taylor has been a major part of the soundtrack to our lives, from weddings to cookouts, school dances to breakups, and everything in between, and he has always carried a piece of this community with him.”

Mayor Gaines continued, “His life and accomplishments show us that big dreams and international success can start right here, in the heart of our great City of Hackensack.”
