Adopt-A-Drain in Hackensack Today!

The City of Hackensack, in partnership with NJ Clean Communities and Hamline University, is proud to present the “Adopt-A-Drain” program for their residents. This initiative is a key element of the City’s ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability, complementing Hackensack’s broader efforts, such as recent collaborations with the NJDEP to enhance water quality and mitigate flooding. These initiatives highlight our dedication to cultivating a cleaner, greener community.

The “Adopt-A-Drain” program, alongside the Recycle Coach app—a mobile and web platform that boosts recycling education and participation—is designed to empower residents to engage in sustainable practices that yield tangible benefits.

Residents are invited to adopt a storm drain in their neighborhood, keeping it free of debris to help prevent local flooding and protect waterways like the Hackensack River from pollution. Thanks to funding from NJ Clean Communities, participation in this program is entirely free, with no costs incurred through taxes, or passed along to residents.

Originating from the Center for Global Environmental Education (CGEE) at Hamline University, the program has successfully engaged communities for six years, enabling residents to contribute to cleaner waterways. Hackensack is excited to join other towns and cities in this collective effort.

“Our community thrives when we unite for initiatives like this,” stated Gregory Liosi, Hackensack Clean Communities Co-Coordinator and Artistic Director. “Just as our bi-annual ‘Slam Dunk the Junk’ event brings together over 300 volunteers to combat litter, this program empowers residents to reduce litter year-round, making a lasting impact for a cleaner Hackensack.”

Participation is easy: visit nj.adopt-a-drain.org to select a drain to adopt. Participants are encouraged to regularly clean their adopted drain and report the type and amount of debris collected via the online platform. After signing up, you will receive a welcome package from Adopt-A-Drain, which includes a guide on how to maintain your drain, safety tips, and a lawn sign to display your commitment to the program.

“By leveraging digital platforms like Adopt-A-Drain and Recycle Coach, we provide residents with tools for real-time environmental action,” said Frank Borrelli, Hackensack Clean Communities Co-Coordinator and IT Manager. “The data collected by residents using Adopt-A-Drain will be invaluable for the DPW and the Project Manager’s Office in maintaining our drainage and sewer systems.”
