 August 22, 2013

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

City of Hackensack Schedules Annual Seasonal Influenza Immunization Programs For Adults

HACKENSACK ADULTS ARE URGED TO GET FLU READY & REGISTER ONLINE:

Online Registration is Available Here: www.njpublichealth.com

The Hackensack Department of Health urges residents, especially those who are at high risk of complications from influenza, to get a flu shot early in the season. Residents are always encouraged to use universal respiratory precautions to help prevent illness. That means people should cover their mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing, wash their hands often and avoid touching their eyes, nose and mouth with unclean hands.
Other precautions include staying home from school or work when sick, and avoiding close contact with people who are ill to reduce the spread of the flu.

Every year on average in the U.S. more than 200,000 people are hospitalized and about 36,000 people die from flu. Complications of flu can include bacterial pneumonia, dehydration, and worsening of chronic medical conditions such as congestive heart failure, asthma or diabetes.

Those over the age of 65 and high-risk individuals should also get a pneumococcal vaccination from their health care provider to prevent this type of pneumonia, if they have not previously had this vaccine. The majority of deaths during the influenza pandemic of 1918-1919 were not caused by the influenza virus acting alone, report researchers from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health. Instead, most victims succumbed to bacterial pneumonia following influenza virus infection.

These programs are for anyone over 18 years of age. There is no direct charge to senior citizens who have current Medicare Part B coverage and do not participate in a managed care / HMO health care plan. For all others the fees are $15 for influenza and $25 for pneumonia. Seniors who participate in a managed care plan should consult with their primary care physician.

This year Hackensack is initiating a new online flu program registration system.
