City of Hackensack Beginning Project to Return Main Street to Two Way street, Expected to Aid in Downtown Revitalization

HACKENSACK, N.J. -- City officials are announcing the beginning of a major infrastructure project that will return Main and State Streets to two-way traffic, a change that will support Mayor John Labrosse and the City Council's goal of revitalizing Downtown Hackensack. The change will begin with State Street, which runs parallel to Main Street. State Street should be complete by late Fall. Work on Main will commence after State Street is completed. The entire project is expected to be complete by August of 2018. The city will be using multiple communication methods to inform residents and drivers of the change, including the city website, reverse 911 and Nixle alerts, electronic signage and other means.

"A series of urban planning professionals have advised that one way main streets cannot effectively function in mixed residential, commercial centers, so we are very eager to see this project be completed," said Mayor Labrosse. "This change will increase the amount of potential customers driving up and down Main Street, benefiting existing businesses and helping us attract more of them. It will also help us make Main Street more pedestrian and bicycle friendly, supporting our vision of a sustainable and walkable Downtown area." The mayor added that steps will be taken to ensure traffic runs as smoothly as possible including tandem parking that eliminates the need to parallel park, moving buses off Main, and changing the times in loading zones.

Hackensack's Main Street is in the midst of a major revitalization with nearly $1 billion in new real estate value coming to the city over the next several years, including thousands of new housing units and several major commercial developments. The Two Way Main Street conversion is another piece of the City's vision for its Downtown area, with an overall goal of making Hackensack a destination and the cultural and economic center of Bergen County.
