A Brief History of the Corps

May 1948
The Hackensack Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Inc. was incorporated with nine charter members and one ambulance. The ambulances and members were housed in a small building located at the corner of The Esplanade and Central Avenue on the location of the current Nellie K. Parker Elementary School.

Middle 1960's
The amount of emergency calls increased so much that the corps had to buy three ambulances and recruit more volunteers so that they could serve the city effectively.

Originally, the corps operated 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. As time progressed, so did the amount of emergency calls. The corps found it harder and harder to get volunteers for the daytime shifts. At that time the Hackensack Fire Department supplemented the ambulance service during daytime hours, Monday through Friday 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

February 14, 1974
The ambulance corps volunteers joined forces with Hackensack Hospital and formed a cardiac unit, which was comprised of a nurse, doctor, and a volunteer ambulance corps member. The ambulance corps transported the nurse and doctor to the scene of life threatening emergencies to initiate pre-hospital advanced life support procedures. This was the beginning of the Hackensack University Medical Center?s Mobile Intensive Care Paramedic Unit, which has become one of the most highly credited paramedic units in the state.

July 1976
The ambulance corps relocated from Central Avenue to its present location behind the City Hall complex located at 205 State Street.

Our Volunteers
Through the years, many of our volunteers moved on to valuable and rewarding careers using their E.M.S. background as an excellent foundation. These careers include, but are not limited to: police dispatchers, police officers and police superiors, a local Chief of Police, numerous career EMT?s and EMT instructors, paramedics, nurses, doctors, other allied health personnel and firefighters. Many of these dedicated volunteers continued volunteering for the corps while juggling these full time emergency service careers. That display of dedication is what our corps is all about and why our success continues.

Our Ambulances
The corps currently operates 3 ambulances, two new 2007 McCoy-Miller type-3 ambulances and one 1999 Wheeled Coach ambulance, as well as a Ford Police Interceptor supervisor's car. Each ambulance and the necessary equipment to stock it costs more than $130,000 each! Our newest additions of the 2007 McCoy-Miller ambulances would not have been possible without the generous donations from the city's residents and businesses. We are funded solely by your donations. The corps is a non-profit organization and your generous donation is tax deductible.

We need your help and your time!

Our volunteer ambulance corps members work tirelessly and without pay. The volunteers keep returning because of their dedication and pride in the community, the incredible sense of satisfaction in helping to save a life, deliver a baby, administer CPR or just helping a fellow person in their time of need.

The ambulance corps is currently accepting applications for the 2008 summer Emergency Medical Technician program. Anyone 16 years of age and older may apply. The summer program is a condensed, full-time curriculum, designed for those who are accustomed to intense classes and extensive reading assignments. Attendance at all classes is mandatory.

Training and tuition is free for prospective volunteers of the Hackensack Volunteer Ambulance Corps. Candidates will have to pass the state-administered test certifying them as Emergency Medical Technicians upon completion of the course. Two locations are available for the summer training:

  • In Mahwah at the Bergen County Police Academy, full time nights 7:00 pm to 10:30 pm, Monday through Thursday, beginning Wednesday, May 28, 2008 and completing on August 4, 2008.
  • In Paramus at the Bergen County EMS Training Center, full time days 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, Monday through Thursday, beginning July 7, 2008 and completing on August 11, 2008.

Anyone interested in joining the Hackensack Volunteer Ambulance Corps and receiving this free, life-saving training can complete an application at the Hackensack Police Department, 225 State Street, Hackensack, NJ. Applications can be completed at the police station at any time. Applications can also be completed at the Volunteer Ambulance Headquarters any night at 6:00 pm. A thorough criminal background check will be conducted to determine eligibility.

Applications need to be completed and submitted as soon as possible, as class space fills quickly.
