A Brief History of the Corps

May 1948
The Hackensack Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Inc. was incorporated with nine charter members and one ambulance.  The ambulances and members were housed in a small building located at the corner of The Esplanade and Central Avenue on the location of the current Nellie K. Parker Elementary School.

Originally, the Corps operated 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.  As time progressed, the amount of emergency calls increased.  The Corps found it more difficult to get volunteers for the daytime shifts.  At that time, the Hackensack Fire Department supplemented the ambulance service during daytime hours, Monday through Friday 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Mid- 1960’s

The amount of emergency calls increased so much that the Corps had to buy three ambulances and recruit more volunteers so that they could serve the city effectively.

February 14, 1974

The Ambulance Corps volunteers joined forces with Hackensack Hospital and formed a cardiac unit, which was comprised of a nurse, doctor, and a volunteer Ambulance Corps member.  The Ambulance Corps transported the nurse and doctor to the scene of life threatening emergencies to initiate pre-hospital advanced life support procedures.  This led to the creation of the Hackensack University Medical Center’s Mobile Intensive Care Paramedic Unit, which has become one of the most highly recognized paramedic units in the state.

July 1976

The Ambulance Corps relocated from Central Avenue to its present location behind John A. Earl Supply Company at 216 Union Street.

Our Organization

The Hackensack Volunteer Ambulance Corps is available to provide Emergency Medical Services to the community 24 hours a day.  The volunteers’ primary hours are from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. on weekdays, and 24 hours over the weekend.  Due to the shortage of available daytime volunteers, we work in cooperation with Hackensack University Medical Center's Emergency Medical Services.  They provide daytime service to our community.  They have numerous ambulances and support vehicles available to our city at a moment’s notice.

Both the Hackensack Volunteer Ambulance Corps and Hackensack University Medical Center's EMS are dispatched by MICCOM, the Northern New Jersey Mobile Intensive Care Communications Center.  They provide advanced emergency medical dispatch, call screening, and pre-arrival medical instructions to the caller.  All ambulances are tracked by GPS, and MICCOM dispatches the closest available ambulance to an emergency.  This technology far surpasses what was previously available and reduces an ambulance's response time by almost half.

Our Volunteers

Unlike some other ambulance corps, ALL riding members are either certified EMTs or Paramedics.  Through the years, many of our volunteers have moved on to valuable and rewarding careers, using their EMS background as an excellent foundation.  These careers include, but are not limited to:  police dispatchers, police officers and police superiors; a local Chief of Police; numerous career EMTs and EMT Instructors; paramedics, nurses, doctors and other allied health personnel; and firefighters.  Many of these dedicated members continued volunteering for the Corps while juggling these full-time emergency service careers.  That display of dedication is what our Corps is all about and why our success continues.

Our Ambulances

The Corps currently operates four ambulances:  two 2007 McCoy-Miller Type III ambulances, a 2005 Horton Type I 4x4 ambulance, and one 1999 Wheeled Coach Type III ambulance.  A Ford Police Interceptor serves as a supervisor’s car, as well as a temporary command post for large-scale incidents.  Each ambulance and the necessary equipment to stock it costs more than $150,000 each!

We are funded by your donations.  The Corps is a non-profit organization and your generous donation is tax deductible.  Please mail your contribution to this worthy cause to the mailing address above.  PayPal is also an option; please feel free to donate there as well.

We need your help and your time!

Our Volunteer Ambulance Corps members work tirelessly and without pay.  The volunteers keep returning because of their dedication and pride in the community, the incredible sense of satisfaction in helping to save a life, deliver a baby, administer CPR or just assist a fellow person in their time of need.

We are in need of more volunteer Emergency Medical Technicians.

Our Ambulance Corps is one of the busiest in the State of New Jersey.  We provide EMS in an urban setting, and if you are looking to develop your EMS skills, there is no better volunteer organization in which to hone your skills.

The next round of basic training classes begins in January.  Training, and the instructions to apply for the training, will be posted on this site when the applications are available.

Certified EMT's or Paramedics who are interested in membership are asked to call the contact numbers listed above for an application.

Volunteers contribute their time to the Corps in six-hour increments, from 6:00 p.m. to midnight and midnight to 6:00 a.m., on weekdays or weekends.  While any time commitment is greatly appreciated and accepted, the majority of the volunteers contribute more than 60 hours per month!

If you are interested in EMT training or volunteering your time to the Corps, please contact us at the numbers provided.
