Traffic Division

The Traffic Division’s responsibilities consist of overseeing all major motor vehicle accidents and their subsequent investigations, enforcement of all parking and moving violations and maintenance of all city parking meters. The division also investigates all abandoned autos in the City and handles the disposition of traffic warrants. It also oversees the City Sign crew.

Street painting, such as crosswalks and all school crossings are the responsibility of this division, which helps to insure the safety of the pedestrians in the City. There are fifty school crossing guards that the division oversees, including their training.

The Traffic Division works with the New Jersey Division of Motor Vehicles doing periodic traffic stops to ensure that the motor vehicles that pass through our city are properly registered, insured, and in good working order. The division also offers services to the city residents such as assisting with child seat installation and safety instruction. Police escorts for parades, funerals, etc. are provided through the Traffic Division.

Resident Parking Permits

Resident Parking Permits are required for certain streets. Permits can be obtained from the Traffic Division, 215 State Street, between the hours of 7am and 4pm, Mon.- Fri., or between 9am and 12pm on Saturday.  Fee: $5.00. Identification and proof of residence required.  Call 201-646-7736 for more information.

Note:  City parking meters are for quarters only.  Other coins will not work and may cause meters to malfunction.
