| Detective Division
The Captain/Commander in charge of the Detective Division has the overall administrative and operational responsibility for the division. The commander is directly responsible for organizing the division, including directing and controlling personnel under his/her command. The commander oversees complete investigation of violations of City Ordinance and State Law, as well as reported missing persons, pawnshop activities, and the arrest of adults on foreign and local warrants. The commander is also responsible for promoting cooperation between other divisions within the department as well as outside local, county, state, and Federal authorities. The Commander prepares monthly reports and forwards them to the Chief of Police. The lieutenant shall command the Detective Division in the Captains absence. The lieutenant prepares case files for presentation to Bergen County Prosecutor for indictment. He/she prepares duty assignments, and assigns cases for follow-up investigation. He/she deploys resources on a daily basis, and tracks divisional overtime to ensure effective use of resources. The Detective Sergeant/Detective in the Detective Division is responsible for preventing crime, investigating criminal cases, detaining and arresting criminal offenders, and recovering lost or stolen property. He/she may also be assigned specific tasks requiring specialized training. Examples would be Warrant Officer, Megan’s Law Registrar, ABC Law Investigator, Pawnshop Coordinator, and Evidence Officer. Detective Sergeants and Detectives prepare reports to be used in criminal prosecutions. They answer directly to the Lieutenant and Captain in charge of the Detective Division.
