About the Department
The City employs approximately 450 full time employees; the majority assigned to the Police, Fire, Public Works and Sanitation Departments. Hackensack residents receive preference in hiring for all City positions, which are subject to Civil Service Rules and Regulations.Working in conjunction with the New Jersey Department of Personnel, the City Personnel Department attends to the processes of employee hiring, promotion, discipline as well as labor contract negotiations. The City is self insured for both risk and worker's compensation insurance.
