On Tuesday, December 9, 2014, Hackensack's City Council voted unanimously to have the Planning Board conduct a preliminary investigation on a 20-acre property near the city’s downtown (former North Jersey Media site) to determine if the area is in need of redevelopment. If designated, the property would be eligible for tax abatements which would attract potential developers.
“We are excited to be moving forward with the development,” said Stephen Borg, president of North Jersey Media Group. “This is an important first step for the property and the city as a whole.”
Deputy Mayor Kathleen Canestrino said the property is absolutely essential to the city’s downtown redevelopment plan which also includes a 39-block, 163-acre zone previously declared an area in need of rehabilitation that encompasses most of the downtown. Several large-scale projects are currently underway in the Rehabilitation area and elsewhere in the City.
